Not even a challenge.

The coaching carousel has affected the coordinator jobs around the NFL, but a former Philadelphia Eagles assistant was able to land on his feet, okay, after a horrendous run as a head coach.

NFL insider Tom Pelissero reports that the Green Bay Packers are going to hire former Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon to be the defensive coordinator. Gannon spent the last three years in Arizona without a winning record and was fired after the 2025 season.

Eagles fans might try to forget Gannon, but he was the defensive coordinator in 2021 and 2022, when he made the defense a top-five unit during their Super Bowl run. Unfortunately, Gannon was too focused on the Cardinals' head coach's opening that he didn't prepare adequately for the 38-35 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl, which led to the Cardinals being fined for tampering.

This is actually a good spot for Gannon, as he has one of the best pass rushers in the NFL in Micah Parsons on his defense. Former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley left to take the Miami Dolphins' head coaching job.

Green Bay is a frequent playoff visitor but has had trouble reaching the NFC Championship game over the last 10 years. Gannon will be brought in to try to make that happen through the defense.

Unfortunately for Eagles fans, there will be no Gannon revenge game in 2026 as Philly is not slated to play him. Gannon had interviewed for the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Commanders defensive coordinator openings before landing in Green Bay.

The last three years have shown that Gannon struggled as a head coach, but he has shown promising signs of being a well-adjusted, defensive-minded coach. Green Bay better hope that they don't watch those Super Bowl highlights and see all those motions the Chiefs had that Gannon just couldn't defend.
