An underrated storyline in the Philadelphia Eagles' thrilling 24-20 Week 2 win over the Tennessee Titans was tight end Dallas Goedert's injury.
Goedert rolled his leg and ended up hurting his right knee. He left the game and did not return, with Johnny Mundt and E.J. Jenkins taking over.
This is now the second injury to the tight end position, with rookie second-round pick Eli Stowers currently on IR with multiple lower-leg injuries. Philly had no choice but to call franchise legend Zach Ertz to pull a Brandon Graham and save the team from trouble.

Mundt took over as the Eagles' top tight end, and it didn't go well: two receptions for eight yards. But in general, even his blocking, which he was brought in to do, was not particularly great.
That makes the tight end situation even worse, with two healthy tight ends who are backups at best. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has to figure out whether Ertz would be interested in coming back and get him here right away.
Ertz was a former second-round pick of the Eagles in 2013 and put together over eight seasons of strong play. He made the Pro Bowl three times and won a Super Bowl with Philly. In 123 career games with the Eagles, Ertz caught 579 passes for 6,267 yards and 38 touchdowns.
In 2021, the Eagles traded Ertz to the Arizona Cardinals, where he would stay until 2023. In the last two seasons, he had a great run with the Washington Commanders, but a torn ACL ended his 2025 campaign early. He has since recovered and is ready to play.
Bringing Ertz back makes perfect sense, as he would give the Eagles the depth they desperately need at tight end. Also, he's 11 catches away from passing Harold Carmichael for the most career receptions in franchise history.
It would also be good for Jalen Hurts since he already knows Ertz. The two played together for only about a year and a half, but it's better to have a tight end with some knowledge of and chemistry with Hurts than none at all.
Plus, Goedert has a history of injuries and missing time in his career. He hasn't played in 24 games since the 2020 season, leaving the door open to getting some help at tight end behind him.
Roseman mentioned before the season that he and Ertz had conversations, but he didn't go into detail about what they discussed. It's safe to assume those conversations will pick back up once a contract is involved.
The Eagles cannot survive a run without Goedert and Stowers and need to bring in depth at the position. Mundt and Jenkins won't cut it, as they showed against the Titans that the offense isn't as good without Goedert and needs more receiving threat. Hurts needs a security blanket, and Mundt and Jenkins are not it.

At this point, it would be wild not to see Ertz in an Eagles uniform in the next week or two, even if Goedert is okay and can play. Roseman really needs to make this happen and bring the legend back home for one more ride before he runs off into the sunset.
