Patience is wearing thin among Philadelphia Eagles fans with quarterback Andy Dalton and how he is playing.
Dalton got the start for the second straight preseason game against the New England Patriots in Week 2 action, but he struggled again. He completed 3-of-10 passes for 44 yards, all going to wide receiver Darius Cooper, in the 24-21 loss to New England.
Tanner McKee, the man competing with Dalton for the backup job, completed 16-of-22 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns against the Patriots. It feels like the Eagles want Dalton as the backup, but he isn't doing anything to make it happen.
Andy Dalton is losing traction with Eagles quickly for QB2 job
Many wondered why Dalton got another start over McKee after struggling in the 24-7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1 of the preseason. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni explained the decision.
"It's still a competition," Sirianni said via The Athletic's Brooks Kubena. "Andy's going in first because he's not going to play quite as much as Tanner because he has had more experience and he has more experience within this type of system. And Tanner needs to continue to play there — because I think you saw the improvements there from Tanner.
So, we've got to continue to give both of them opportunities within practice — and potentially games. We'll see how that goes. Obviously, I'm not there yet. That was the plan today."
Dalton has only completed six passes in two games out of 16 attempts. His accuracy is not there, and he is clearly holding the offense back from its full potential.
He must be great in practice because the games don't show it. These preseason games are only hurting Dalton's stock and chances of winning the preseason game.
Sirianni's explanation shows that the team likes Dalton and could end up keeping him. Is that the right call, though?
McKee showed in the Patriots game that he should be the clear-cut backup quarterback with no questions asked. If anything, Dalton should now be considered a cut or trade candidate, as he looks awful in these games.
It doesn't make sense since Dalton has had a long NFL career and has been to multiple Pro Bowls with the Cincinnati Bengals. Many Eagles fans are left confused about why someone who is apparently experienced in offensive coordinator Sean Mannion's scheme looks worse than McKee.

The Eagles should roll with McKee as the backup, but this position battle might not be decided yet. Philly wants Dalton to be the choice, but he has done nothing to earn the job at all and has only shown why the Eagles should move on.
