Who knew that a second -round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft would end up being one of Philadelphia Eagles fans' favorite players on the team?

Former Eagles tight end Zach Ertz had that kind of impact on the team over more than eight seasons, with some incredible moments, including catching what would be the game-winning touchdown in the Super Bowl to beat the New England Patriots. Ertz joined his former teammate, Jason Kelce, and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce on their "New Heights" podcast when he opened up about his time with the Eagles.

”It is a little emotional talking about it -- I don’t know why," Ertz said via Bleeding Green Nation.

"But just going through that, I would say, being around the guys. No one’s gonna remember about how many yards, or catches, or starts we had, but I do remember the day-to-day grinding, and the stories of you [Jason] kicking over trash cans because you didn’t like the way a coach was treating someone else, or Lane hiding your helmet. Those are the things I remember about the day-to-day. I don’t remember in Week 11 how many catches or yards, or if we won or not, but I do remember those sorts of things the most.”

Zach Ertz opened up about being an Eagle

Ertz was a three-time Pro Bowler for the Eagles from 2017 through 2019 before the team traded him to the Arizona Cardinals in the middle of the 2021 season. He finished his time in Philly with 579 receptions for 6,267 yards and 38 touchdowns.

After the trade to the Cardinals, Ertz remained in Arizona through the 2023 season, then signed with the Washington Commanders, where he has played over the last two seasons. Last year was a tough one for Ertz as he tore his ACL and missed the final four games of the season.

Ertz is currently a free agent and plans to play in 2026, but no team has signed him yet. There is a chance that he could be signed if an injury happens in training camp, but for now, it appears he might be close to the end of his NFL career.

If this is the end for him, Eagles fans are grateful for what he did for the franchise. He played a massive role in getting the team their first Super Bowl victory and helped Dallas Goedert develop into the tight end that would replace Ertz when he got traded.

There is hope that maybe the Eagles could bring Ertz in to finish his career. It would be the storybook ending all Eagles fans would love to have.
