Low-key Eagles free agent signing will eventually hit the chopping block

As the summer months get going, the Philadelphia Eagles inch closer to the main event of this period: training camp. It's the Super Bowl of the summer, dare I say.

Fans love looking ahead training camp, almost as much as they enjoy actually watching the practices and footage themselves. And, as we get closer to camp and the Eagles get into the thick of practices, there will undoubtedly be some fun roster battles taking place.

One area that the Eagles are in great shape, though, is at running back. But, there's a certain player -- a former Kansas City Chiefs fan favorite -- who is bound to hit the chopping block. He isn't technically a running back, but he's part of the room.

Yes, we're talking Carson Steele being the man who won't end up making the final roster.

The Eagles are bound to cut ties with Carson Steele

First and foremost, the Eagles are pretty set at running back with Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley manning the top three spots on the depth chart. If anyone else joins as a fourth back, it will be either Dameon Pierce or Elijah Mitchell.

Out of those two, Mitchell fits the best, so I'd look for the former Kyle Shanahan favorite to get close to earning a roster spot if he's healthy.

Back to Steele, now.

As a guy who Chiefs fans once thought could be their backfield savior, rather than having to deal with the corpse of Kareem Hunt and an injury-prone Isiah Pacheco, Steele had some moments in training camp as a rookie in 2024.

But after just one season in Kansas City, Steele was cut before the start of the 2025 season and did not get picked up by another team ... at all ... the rest of the 2025 campaign.

Fast forward to January of this year, and the Eagles took a flier on him. But, there is almost zero chance he makes the roster, even if the team chooses to keep a fullback.

If the Eagles wanted to use a fullback but also keep a player who doubles as having another role, look no further than Cameron Latu. The former third-round pick of the 49ers, back in 2023, fits more than one mold. He is able to act both as a tight end and more of an H-back type player.

If Sean Mannion wants to keep a fullback-type in his group, Latu makes the most sense because he is far more versatile. Steele was a fun prospect coming out of college simply because he could mow people over. But it'll take more than being a Dollar Store version of Mike Alstott to stick around in today's NFL.

Latu will be kept if the decision comes down to the two of them, and Steele will once more wonder whether his future in this league is already dwindling.
