Eagles being urged to give defender contract extension (but not Jalen Carter)

Should they give it to him?

With just a few more months until the 2026 season begins, many Philadelphia Eagles fans are wondering whether the team will give defensive tackle Jalen Carter a contract extension, but it might be another defender who should be getting one.

Carter got his fifth-year option picked up on his rookie contract, with many believing a contract extension is coming up soon. ESPN NFL analyst Aaron Schatz thinks the Eagles' final offseason move should be to give defensive tackle Moro Ojomo a contract extension, not Carter.

"Ojomo, a 2023 seventh-round pick, stepped in when Milton Williams left Philadelphia and had a very good season in 2025. Ojomo ranked 11th among qualifying interior linemen with a 10% pass rush win rate and had six sacks and 38 total tackles. He's versatile enough to line up at end or tackle (or, in Philadelphia, as a 5-technique end), and it would be good for the Eagles to extend his rookie contract to maintain consistency on their defensive line in case they can't come to an extension agreement with Jalen Carter next offseason."

Should the Eagles give Moro Ojomo a contract extension over Jalen Carter?

Pro Football Focus gave Ojomo an overall grade of 72.9, ranking 19th out of 134 interior defensive linemen that qualified last season. He racked up 49 pressures and 39 hurries to add to the six sacks he had in 2025.

There is clear evidence that Ojomo is expecting a contract extension, as he signed with Athletes First agency during the offseason. That is usually an indication that he is ready to collect a lot of money either with the Eagles or another team.

The Eagles are in a tough spot with Ojomo, as he is in the final year of his rookie contract and is due to make about $3.6 million. They have a lot of extensions they need to consider on defense with Ojomo, Carter, Quinyon Mitchell, and Cooper DeJean.

Ojomo could serve as a solid backup plan if Carter's contract negotiations don't work out. If the Eagles do put Carter on a longer-term contract, Ojomo's time in Philly is more than likely over.

For a seventh-round pick in 2023, Ojomo has made the most of his playing time and has proven to be a starter in the NFL. The Eagles would love to have him back, but they have to decide whether to keep rolling with him or pay Carter market-setting money.
