As the days get closer and closer to free agency, the hopes of tight end Dallas Goedert re-signing with the Philadelphia Eagles start to dwindle.
It feels as though the two sides might not get anything done, despite Eagles general manager Howie Roseman publicly stating he is open to bringing Goedert back in 2026. Philly might be forced to look elsewhere to replace Goedert, Grant Calcaterra, and Kylen Granson, whether that is in free agency or the NFL Draft.
Well, a solid option just became available thanks to the team on the other side of the state, as NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers have released tight end Jonnu Smith from the team. Pittsburgh saved $7 million with the release, as Smith played one season with the Steelers, catching 38 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns in 2025.
Jonnu Smith could make sense for the Eagles in free agency
There are some connections between Smith and the Eagles that could help bring him into Philly. Smith is a Philadelphia native and knows one of the coaches on staff, quarterbacks coach Parks Frazier. The two were together in Miami with the Dolphins in 2024, where Smith had the best season of his career with 88 receptions, 884 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns, which led to his first and only Pro Bowl selection.
Smith makes for a great option for the Eagles, as he might be one of the best available tight ends and could be cheaper than some believe. Based on what happened last season, Smith's next contract could be in the range of $5-8 million for the year. If Roseman works his magic, he might even be able to get that lower.

Goedert might be out the door, but Smith would certainly be able to help out the tight end room even if it is on a one-year deal. The Eagles should strongly consider bringing him to Philly and making him the starter, with a rookie added in the draft.
