The Philadelphia Eagles went into Day 2 of the NFL's legal tampering period with zero new players signed and only one tight end on the active roster.
That has completely changed as the Eagles signed cornerback Riq Woolen and tight end Johnny Mundt. It didn't stop Philly from also bringing back a player from last year's team, as ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that tight end Grant Calcaterra will return to the Eagles on a one-year contract.
Calcaterra initially was selected in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Eagles. He has caught 42 passes for 494 yards and two touchdowns in 62 games.
Eagles are bringing back Grant Calcaterra
The tight end position just got very interesting for the Eagles as they now have Calcaterra, Mundt, and Cameron Latu. Philly views Latu as a fullback and special teams ace, so one more tight end should be added before the 2026 season begins.
For the time being, the battle to watch at training camp is between Calcaterra and Mundt, whether for the starting job or the backup job. Mundt is more of a blocking tight end and is a lot more efficient as a blocking tight end than Calcaterra. Last season, Calcaterra was ranked as one of the worst blocking tight ends in the NFL.
It certainly feels as though the Eagles must add another tight end to make the unit whole, as Calcaterra and Mundt are not known as big pass threats. One option is to bring Dallas Goedert back to the team, as he has been the starter for almost a decade. The other option is to select one in the NFL Draft, as the Eagles are predicted to pick a tight end in the first two days.

Goedert will be the player to watch for to see if he will complete the tight end room or of a rookie is coming in to compete with Calcaterra and Mundt.
