Eagles coach didn't hold back on decision to join team despite not getting OC job

At least he was honest.

The Philadelphia Eagles went through quite the transformation on the offensive coaching staff, with Sean Mannion taking over as offensive coordinator and adding some serious firepower.

One of those additions was former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard, who Philly hired to be the new passing game coordinator despite interviewing for the Eagles OC job. Grizzard spoke with the media at OTAs last week for the first time since being hired, opening up about working with Mannion.

“Once you accept the job, you kind of know what it is,” Grizzard said via NBC Sports Philadelphia's Dave Zangaro. “But not (awkward) at all. I had always heard great things about Sean. I had never met Sean. But just working in the NFL for 10 years now, there’s enough people that I knew that knew him and listening and feeling the culture here, that if I would have thought that would have been a problem, I wouldn’t have even accepted the job.

“It’s been fantastic getting to know him and work with him. He’s a tireless worker. He’s ready for the opportunity, so it’s been a lot of fun.”

Josh Grizzard is enjoying his time as Eagles' passing game coordinator

Grizzard has put together a good NFL resume over the last 10 years, with most of that time spent on the Miami Dolphins staff from 2017 through 2023. He joined the Buccaneers in 2024 as their passing game coordinator before being promoted last year to offensive coordinator after Liam Coen took the Jacksonville Jaguars head coaching job.

Similar to what happened in Philly with Kevin Patullo last season, Grizzard struggled in his transition to the play-calling job, and the Buccaneers' offense suffered for it. They ranked 21st in total offense and 18th in points as Tampa Bay missed the postseason, and he was fired after the season ended.

While he wasn't able to win the offensive coordinator job, Grizzard shared more about the interview process and what it was like to meet with the Eagles organization.

“It was a lot of fun in the interview process, really getting to know everybody in the organization,” Grizzard said. “I had worked with a couple people on staff here in the past. They just raved about the culture here. Finally getting a chance through the first time on Zoom, getting a chance to meet with Mr. (Jeffrey) Lurie and Howie (Roseman) and Nick (Sirianni). I really hadn’t met any of those guys in the past.

“But going through that process as the coordinator interview and then coming in for the second interview, you really get a feel for the whole building and meeting people. There’s a feel to this place and the winning, the history, that really was exciting for me. Not getting the coordinator job and then being offered the opportunity to join as a pass game coordinator, I felt like it was a great opportunity.”

Grizzard has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with Mannion, as he can teach him some of the good and bad that came his way from what happened to him as OC last year in Tampa. It seemed clear that Grizzard was not ready to be a play-caller, but he's a smart offensive mind who can bring a lot to the table to get this Eagles passing game going after finishing 23rd in passing yards.

If Grizzard is able to do a good job in Philly, this could be the launching pad for him to get back into the offensive coordinator role elsewhere in the NFL.
