Eagles' Sean Mannion just put Kevin Patullo to shame with Jalen Hurts comments

Just less than a week into training camp with the Philadelphia Eagles, new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion already feels like a massive upgrade from Kevin Patullo.

The offense has not been perfect through the first three days of camp, but Mannion has this unit rolling strong early. One of the focuses has been on quarterback Jalen Hurts learning the new scheme, which seems to be going well so far.

Mannion spoke to the media for the first time since training camp began, opening up about his working relationship with Hurts. His answer makes it seem like they are completely on the same page.

"Oh yeah, it's been, it's been constant, you know, back and forth," Mannion said via SportsRadio 94 WIP's Eliot Shorr-Parks. "And Jalen's had a ton of success in this league and, you know, has played in a lot of games. So, you know, I always want to know the things that he feels comfortable with. If there's something that maybe we need to detail out further for him, you know, because there's so many things that, you know, you'd love to dive into really the nitty-gritty of a play and help him, you know, help him just with total mastery. And I think a lot of it is for me as a play caller getting a feel for, you know, what are his comfort calls, what are the things that on second and long that he feels, you know, super confident. So it's been a great partnership, you know, with Jalen since we got here. The back-and-forth has been outstanding. He asks really thought-provoking questions, and, you know, it's been a lot of fun to work with him."

Eagles feel different with Sean Mannion than Kevin Patullo regarding Jalen Hurts

Looking back during the offseason and OTAs, Mannion and Hurts have been very complimentary to each other. Hurts especially has been excited about working with Mannion, showing more enthusiasm than he did with Patullo last year.

The vibes have been very different from 2025 with Patullo, as it almost felt like he was forced upon the players. Eagles starting left tackle Jordan Mailata has called Mannion an " evil genius " multiple times in the last two months. Those words were never uttered about Patullo.

That showed last year, as the Eagles were in the bottom 15 in total offense, passing, rushing, and scoring. Patullo too many times called the same run plays on first and second down and the good old hitch route on third down.

This time around, it's all about Mannion bringing creativity to the offense. He will be asking for more pre-snap motions, more passes in the middle of the field, and more RPO calls. Mannion complimented Hurts on his running abilities, hinting at more Hurts runs to come.

“He does a lot of things well. He’s really operated through all facets of the offense comfortably. The piece of him as an athlete in the running game is something unique.”

Patullo was very good at game-planning, but was way over his head as a play-caller. Mannion seems to have the right plan to help Hurts be way more successful than he was last year.
