Eagles' first post-A.J. Brown trade move goes in a much different direction

Oh...okay then.

The Philadelphia Eagles can officially say that they have moved on from A.J. Brown after finally trading him to the New England Patriots for two draft picks.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman was making multiple moves even before the Brown trade was made official. The Eagles signed wide receiver Samori Toure and, to make room for him, released linebacker Chandler Martin.

Well, to fill the roster hole that Brown left from his trade, the Eagles announced that they have signed running back Elijah Mitchell. During his NFL career, Mitchell is better known for his time with the San Francisco 49ers, when he rushed for 963 yards in his rookie season. He has racked up 1,523 yards and nine touchdowns between his time with the 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs.

It's an interesting move for the Eagles as their backfield is starting to get a little bit more crowded. Saquon Barkley is the clear-cut starter with Tank Bigsby being his backup, but there is clearly going to be a heavy battle at training camp for RB3.

Originally, it was going to be Will Shipley and Dameon Pierce battling it out, with special teams playing a role in determining the winner. Mitchell has now thrown himself into the competition.

Last year with the Chiefs, Mitchell played just one game after suffering a season-ending hamstring injury with the 49ers in 2024. It feels as though he has not been the same running back, as he has a similar path to Pierce's: both were standouts as rookies but have fallen apart over the last few years.

Now training camp is going to get more interesting with Mitchell in the picture, but also a sign that Roseman and company are moving on from Brown completely.
