Eagles have bigger QB problems than Jalen Hurts' Day 2 camp struggles

Day 1 of training camp for the Philadelphia Eagles was actually a big success for starting quarterback Jalen Hurts.

In practice, Hurts completed 13-of-17 passes and looked efficient. He was running more plays under center and looked comfortable throwing the ball down the middle of the field.

Then comes Day 2, where things were more of a struggle. SportsRadio 94 WIP Eagles reporter Eliot Shorr-Parks gave Hurts a C grade for the practice. Some missed throws and a great defensive performance made things more difficult for the franchise quarterback.

"It was a tough day to be Jalen Hurts. The Eagles defensive line won the day against the Eagles offensive line and as a result Hurts was under pressure for a good portion of the day. He was probably sacked 3-4 times in 11v11."

Why the Eagles have much more to worry about than Jalen Hurts struggling for one practice

There might be some panic from the outside seeing Hurts not have as great a practice. He had some missed throws, including DeVonta Smith being wide open 40 yards down the field, and he not hitting him. Things like that are going to happen at camp.

What's the bigger problem for the Eagles is what is going on behind Hurts. The Eagles are still trying to figure out what is going on with Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee at QB2. That's a battle that will continue throughout camp, but no one is separating themselves from each other.

OTAs were kind of similar between Dalton and McKee, and they were neck and neck. The two struggled throughout those three months, which is why the QB2 battle is where it is. There's still time to figure out what's going on there.

Another concern is the Eagles' rookie fifth-round pick, Cole Payton. While many knew this was going to be a bit of an experiment, it still has left the team with some concerns after what happened on Day 2 of practice.

Payton did not have a good practice. At one point, he had back-to-back interceptions and then closed things out with a third interception of the practice.

"Cole Payton has thrown three interceptions today, two on consecutive plays during 7-on-7 (although one was a bobbled pass and not his fault) and a third just now on a pass to Eli Stowers at the end of practice," PHLY Eagles reporter E.J. Smith said. "Rough day for the rookie."

Many Eagles fans were trying to convince themselves that Payton could eventually replace Hurts, but that isn't happening anytime soon. Payton has the athletic ability, but after only one season as a starting quarterback in college, he'll need a few years to develop. Eagles fans hope this doesn't turn out as it did with Kyle McCord last year.

Maybe it's too soon to worry about the quarterback position, as Hurts is still accurate with the football and not turning it over, but everyone behind him has to step up and play better. Thankfully, there are about four more weeks to get things back on track.
