Eagles have one painfully obvious cut candidate in last part of 2026 offseason

He won't be here for long.

When the Philadelphia Eagles selected Vanderbilt tight end Eli Stowers in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft, fans in Philly were ecstatic, but not everyone was a fan.

Most of the tight ends in the Eagles' room probably weren't too thrilled about it because that means one less roster spot on the team. Bleacher Report writer Moe Moton named off one player on each NFL team that could still get cut in the offseason, with his choice for the Eagles being Grant Calcaterra.

"The Philadelphia Eagles signed Grant Calcaterra to a one-year extension. Yet he doesn't have a secure roster spot after the club selected Eli Stowers in the second round of the draft. Dallas Goedert tops the Eagles' tight end depth chart. Assuming Stowers emerges as the primary backup, Calcaterra would be the third-stringer. In that position, at 27 years old, the latter is in jeopardy of losing his roster spot on a new deal."

Grant Calcaterra could still be gone from the Eagles' roster in 2026

It's crazy how much one season can change for someone, as Calcaterra had a lot of hope after replacing Goedert well in the 2024 season when he was hurt. Last year rolled around, and everything completely changed at tight end.

Goedert missed only two games in 2025 and got a lot of red-zone targets, resulting in a franchise-record 11 touchdowns for a tight end. Calcaterra, on the other hand, ended up being one of the worst blocking tight ends in the NFL and was inconsistent in the passing game.

The Eagles now have the future at tight end with Stowers, as Goedert will most likely hold the starting job for just one more year. New offensive coordinator Sean Mannion brought in a ton of competition for the third-string job with Stone Smartt and Johnny Mundt being signed in free agency, as they are more known as blocking tight ends.

Calcaterra has an uphill battle in training camp to keep his spot on the roster, as he looks more and more like a guy who will get cut in 2026.
