Well, the Philadelphia Eagles weren't able to land Mike McDaniel for the open offensive coordinator job, which is a soul crusher, but they might be able to be the next thing just as good as McDaniel. Why not his offensive coordinator in Miami?
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Eagles completed an interview with Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith for the Eagles' open OC role. Smith has been the offensive coordinator for Miami since 2022, helping McDaniel post top 10 finishes in 2022 and 2023.
This is just the latest name for the Eagles, as they have interviewed several candidates still in the running for the job, including Mike Kafka, Jim Bob Cooter, and Declan Doyle. Smith can now be added to that list.
Should Eagles fans get excited for Frank Smith as an OC candidate?
The Eagles wanted McDaniel's offense because it was creative. Smith was the offensive coordinator who helped make that happen, so it makes all the sense in the world to at least talk to him.
One issue with Smith is the same hang-up on a candidate like Doyle, who didn't call the plays in Miami. McDaniel handled that while being the head coach as well. That would put Smith at a disadvantage, as the Eagles want someone with that experience, which was partly why their offense struggled under Kevin Patullo as the OC.
At this point, though, the Eagles shouldn't be picky about their candidates and bring in anyone who wants to talk about it. Smith had success with the Dolphins, especially last year when the passing game struggled, and they adapted a strong running game to close out the season. That's something the Eagles need desperately for their offense.

Smith is far from the worst candidate to talk to the Eagles, but will he excite the fan base? That remains to be seen.
