Eagles must resist the urge to bring back Super Bowl champion in 2026

Don't do it!

The Philadelphia Eagles are going through an offseason of many changes to the coaching staff, but it could also affect the roster, depending on what happens.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman is having to deal with concerns that he will not have enough money to bring back key players who are free agents, so he is having to pick and choose. After the retirement scare of Lane Johnson and Landon Dickerson, the Eagles might be more tempted to have future replacements ready behind them.

One option that is about to become available is former starting guard Mekhi Becton, who will be released by the Los Angeles Chargers in the coming days, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Becton was the Eagles' starting right guard in 2024 as he helped the team win a Super Bowl before signing a two-year deal with the Chargers last offseason.

Eagles need to stay away from Mekhi Becton

As much as the notion of having Becton on the team would be great, this is a move the Eagles must avoid. Becton was very good in 2024, arguably his best season in the NFL after transitioning from left tackle to right guard, but things have changed dramatically since.

Becton was ranked 31st last year in pressure rate percentage with 8.33%. He struggled mightily with the Chargers, which caused some friction between him and the team as he dealt with injuries and performance issues.

The Eagles currently have Tyler Steen at right guard, and while it hasn't been perfect in his first year as the starter, he has done well enough to hold onto the job and develop. Another factor to think about with Becton: former Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland is no longer in Philly, so Becton won't get the same kind of coaching from Chris Kuper that he needs.

Philly is much better off finding talent in the draft to select a tackle and guard to back up Johnson and Dickerson. Becton is a nice idea, but one the Eagles need to avoid.
