Many are hoping that the Philadelphia Eagles are getting close to finalizing their coaching staff, as they have once again added another coach to the fold.

NFL insider Mike Garafolo reported that the Eagles have hired Jerrod Johnson to a position on the staff. Johnson recently reached a mutual agreement to leave the Houston Texans after serving as their quarterbacks coach.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni had interviewed Johnson for the offensive coordinator opening in 2024 and 2026 before going with Kellen Moore two years ago and Sean Mannion last month. Johnson was the Minnesota Vikings' assistant quarterbacks coach in 2022, when Mannion was the backup, and the offensive quality control coach for the Indianapolis Colts in 2020, when Sirianni was the offensive coordinator.

Jerrod Johnson joining Eagles' staff means more to Jalen Hurts than anything

It's clear that Sirianni thinks very highly of Johnson and has been working on getting him on his staff over the last two years. While no title has been given to Johnson, expect him to potentially play a similar role that Kevin Patullo did early in his career as Sirianni's right-hand man. Johnson must have made quite an impression to have interviewed for the offensive coordinator job twice and be a finalist this time around.

More than anything, though, this move is big for star quarterback Jalen Hurts. Much has been said about Hurts having more of an unknown future than he has had in the past few years because of his up-and-down 2025 campaign, but Johnson's hiring shows more than just a promising coach joining a retooled staff.

The Eagles are trying to go all in with Hurts and give them the help he needs. Philly has surrounded him with guys like Mannion, Parks Frazier as his quarterback coach, and now Johnson. They are adding young, bright-minded coaches who have played quarterback to better connect with Hurts and get him ready for the new system he's about to run.

Hurts has no more excuses to him as he's got to perform well in 2026 with this innovative scheme, with some of the brightest young minds in the NFL. If this upcoming season turns out to be another average year for the three-time Pro Bowler, a much different conversation is being had next offseason, and Hurts won't be a fan of it.
