We are once again opening another chapter of the Philadelphia Eagles' trade saga involving wide receiver A.J. Brown, and this time, it comes with an alarming bit of news.
Just last night, we heard a report from Ian Rapoport, which stated the New England Patriots not necessarily wanting to give up a first-round pick at this point. Along with that, Rapoport hinted that this could wind up dragging on a while.
Now, another NFL insider is chiming in and bringing even more to light on the situation. Josina Anderson had this to say on the issue at hand:
"A league source tells me this morning that the Eagles and Patriots have recently “grappled" over the component of the total trade compensation for AJ Brown that could involve a 'swapping of picks.'"
It's long been assumed the Patriots were going to give up a first rounder, but as June 1 approaches quickly, maybe they're starting to try and get cute. New England does have a little bit of bargaining power, too, if no other team is going to come forward with a real offer. If it's only the Patriots, then what will it take for Brown to be moved?
What would it take for Eagles to trade A.J. Brown if not a first-round pick?
For the sake of keeping it simple, let's look at this year's NFL Draft pick trade value chart over at Pro Football Reference. The Eagles want a first rounder, of course. Let's keep this realistic, too. Would the Patriots repeat as AFC Champions? Maybe.
But, let's keep them right at where they picked after they traded up to select Caleb Lomu at no. 28 overall. The no. 28 pick is valued at 660 points. So, if a first rounder was truly off the table, then what would the Patriots have to give up in order to make it worthwhile?
New England's second rounder this year, at no. 55, was valued at 350 points.
Assuming the Eagles don't want to add nickels and dimes to get to that first-round value, we could essentially just assume the Patriots would have to give up another second rounder in the deal, which would bring the trade value back up over 660 points.
Would a 2027 second and a 2028 second be enough for Roseman to bite?
There have been talks about Brown's price tag having "started" at a first-round pick, insinuating that the Eagles would get a first rounder and then some. So, would it be enough to land two seconds for Brown?
Assuming no other team seriously enters the mix (looking at you, Jacksonville) then this might be the best Roseman is going to get, if not that coveted first rounder.
