Going to be tight competition.

Summer break is underway for the Philadelphia Eagles, which means there will be over a month of nothing happening and a lot of analysis about what to think of OTAs before training camp starts next month.

Three weeks of OTAs gave Eagles fans plenty to talk about, as there was a lot of good and bad that came with it. Focusing on the good, the defense performed well, maybe too well, to the point that there might be more competition than many expected.

One player on the defensive side of the ball certainly made a name for himself, even though everyone already knows who he is. This performance at OTAs might have been enough to prompt a real conversation about the depth chart.

Could Jeremiah Trotter Jr. really compete with Jihaad Campbell for a starting job?

Trotter was one of the bright spots in OTAs as he was all over the field. He had an interception on Jalen Hurts and was reportedly making plays every day to the point that Eagles reporters were sharing the same updates daily.

It certainly adds a lot more intrigue to the linebacker position as the Eagles look to find their Nakobe Dean replacement. Most thought it was a lock that Jihaad Campbell would be starting in Dean's spot, but Trotter is making a convincing argument at the moment.

Eagles fans have known Trotter to be more of a special teams ace, as he was top five in the NFL last year in special teams tackles. In Philly's Week 18 loss to the Washington Commanders last season, Trotter proved that he can get it done on defense after racking up a game-high 12 tackles, two quarterback hits, and one tackle for loss.

Campbell still feels like the favorite to win the job and probably should, since he is a former first-round pick and has played well himself, but the Eagles cannot ignore what Trotter's role must be in 2026. He should be in the rotation way more often in the new year.
