With the offseason rolling for the Philadelphia Eagles and some quiet time for news, this is starting to spark some big debates on sports radio in Philly.
SportsRadio 94 WIP in Philadelphia held a daylong debate across its shows about whether Eagles star quarterback Jalen Hurts should receive a contract extension with the team after another winning season. The station's Eagles reporter Eliot Shorr-Parks made some interesting comments on the topic as he supported the idea of extending Hurts with some advice to the quarterback.
"I would yeah. I think that I would double down on Jalen (Hurts) before I would trade him and I really think that's what it is. I think if Jalen and his camp go to the Eagles and say they want a new contract and the Eagles say no, I think Jalen should ask for a trade. If I'm Jalen, I'm not sitting around another year when Nick's (Sirianni) got paid, other people have gotten paid, I've won a Super Bowl for you and you're still not going to pay me? There are plenty of teams out there that would pay Jalen Hurts."
Eagles reporter says Jalen Hurts should ask for a trade if not extended
In some respects, last season was an improvement for Hurts over 2024, but overall, it just wasn't quite the same. He completed 64.8% of his passes for 3,224 yards and 25 touchdowns (career-high) to six interceptions, adding another 421 rushing yards and eight touchdowns (career-low rushing stats when starting more than 10 games).
Hurts's accuracy dropped in 2024, especially on deep balls, and he refused to throw it in the middle of the field. He also did not run the ball nearly as much as he has in the past, with reports in the middle of the season saying he asked for fewer QB-designed runs.
The good part of last season is that he continues to protect the football well, so outside of the Los Angeles Chargers game last year, he's not putting his team in harm's way. When he's playing well, the offense flows better, so he can still dictate how well they do.
Hurts still has three more years on his contract, and his cap hits are starting to exceed $30 million each season, with 2028 at $47 million. He's got a favorable contract compared to other starting quarterbacks around the NFL, so if they wanted to give him an extension, they have some wiggle room without crippling themselves financially.
It's a difficult debate to have, as Hurts is one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL, but there are other areas where the team can save money. On the flip side, the Eagles may not find a quarterback who can win more than 69% of his starts, as Hurts has, so he's almost irreplaceable without starting fresh at quarterback.

Hopefully, it never gets to the point of Hurts asking for a trade from the team, as that is the last thing this franchise needs to deal with right now.
