Most people thought the re-signing of tight end Dallas Goedert by the Philadelphia Eagles would put an end to the moves at the position. If that were every fan's thought, they would be wrong.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Eagles have signed tight end Stone Smartt to a one-year contract. Smartt would now make it five tight ends in the Eagles' room, and the second new addition is former Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Johnny Mundt, who also signed with Philly.
Smartt spent last season with the New York Jets after the previous three years with the Los Angeles Chargers. He caught seven passes for 52 yards in 15 games with the Jets in 2025.
Eagles bring in another tight end with Stone Smartt
Smartt is more of a blocking tight end similar to Mundt, so there's a training camp battle that will be worth monitoring for Eagles fans. It's an interesting dynamic being created in the tight end room for the Eagles as they have added more talent to the roster.
With five tight ends, it does make some wonder whether one will get selected in the 2026 NFL Draft. It feels as though the Eagles are going to bring in as many as possible to get their choice of who stays and who goes.
Goedert feels like the only lock on the roster, as he should go into the season as the starter. As for the backup, Grant Calcaterra is familiar with Philadelphia, so he could have an advantage unless a tight end gets selected early in the NFL Draft. Mundt and Smartt will battle it out for the blocking tight end role, while Cameron Latu is a special teams weapon, so that will save him from losing his job.

The Eagles will have a lot of tough decisions to make and Smartt won't make it any easier at tight end.
