Eagles legends DeSean Jackson, LeSean McCoy discuss Chip Kelly's tyrannical era
We won't say they'll never be a group of skill players that equal what the Philadelphia Eagles had with Michael Vick, Nick Foles, LeSean McCoy, Desean Jackson, Jason Avant, and Brent Celek because you never know. Just look at what the Birds have now: Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert are all special. We will say this though. What Philly had in 2013 was a pretty special bunch as well.
It felt like the only thing that could derail the consistent onslaught of a group that talented was infighting or some unraveling of the core. Wouldn't you know it? The tyrannical reign of Chip Kelly provided the latter.
Nick Foles, LeSean McCoy, DeSean Jackson, Jason Peters, and Evan Mathis all made the Pro Bowl roster that season. McCoy, Peters, and Mathis were all named as First-Team All-Pros. Then, it happened.
During the following offseason, on March 28, 2014, it was announced that Philly was trading DeSean Jackson. In 2015, McCoy was traded to the Buffalo Bills for linebacker Kiko Alonso. Jeremy Maclin was allowed to leave and sign with the Kansas City Chiefs. Foles was dealt to the Saint Louis Rams as part of a trade package that landed Sam Bradford. Each move was excruciating to watch.
It was almost as if Kelly was a spy sent to ruin the Birds from the inside out. Years later, Shady and D-Jax are talking.
LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson discuss their disdain for Chip Kelly's tyrannical rule on their 25/10 Show.
As soon as we learned DeSean Jackson and LeSean McCoy were launching a podcast, in the back of our minds, we knew there would be an episode about Chip Kelly. We didn't know when it was coming. We weren't certain of what might be said, but we knew, beyond the shadow of a doubt that there was no way the subject wouldn't come up.
Both have been clear over the years that there was certainly no love lost, but as we settle into May, they're breaking their silence. Once we saw the preview on their social media accounts, we knew this one was going to be juicy.
Shady and D-Jax let it all fly including their thoughts about Chip's thwarted effort to trade Brandon Graham and thoughts about racial tension. They even called Jason Peters for an unbiased opinion.
In the end, we got what we hoped for: raw emotion, truth, and inside access. We can't help but ask a question though. What if this team had stayed together?
Give this one a listen. The full episode can be found below. While you're chewing on that one, we're adding The 25/10 Show to our rotation along with New Heights, Fran Duffy's thing, and our very own YouTube channel.
One thing is certain. We're never short of a few great listens in terms of Eagles content. This should be a fun-filled ride through the coming 2024 season.
