4. Ron Rivera, Washington Commanders

A former Eagles assistant and head coach of the Carolina Panthers, Ron Rivera hasn't been able to find sustained success since taking over in Washington back in 2020. The challenges stretch past the football field.

He has had to deal with his cancer diagnosis. There's an ownership change underway (the current regime has brought unwanted attention to a once-proud franchise). Controversy seems to be at every turn. Despite all of that, Rivera has done well. His Commanders are just five games under .500 over the course of his three seasons there.

Rivera has taken the Commanders to the playoffs just once (2020) after winning a weak NFC East division with a 7-9 record. They'd lose a hard-fought game to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round, but they pushed their opponent to the limit. The Commanders finished with seven wins again in 2021 before notching an 8-8-1 mark in 2022. They were oh so close to securing a playoff spot, one that went to the Giants.

With the Commanders' sale by Dan Snyder to the Josh Harris group nearing NFL approval, it's tough to see Rivera making it beyond this season unless, of course, the Commanders have a monster season. That probably won't happen.

Washington filled some of their defensive needs during the draft. They are still home to some playmakers on offense, but they lack a true franchise quarterback. Maybe Rivera's squad could surprise some people, but right now, he's in the worst situation in the NFC East.
