The first week of free agency has been quiet for the Philadelphia Eagles, but the signing of cornerback Riq Woolen has by far been the biggest move general manager Howie Roseman has made.

Woolen's signing was seen as a risky move since he was in and out of the lineup for the Seattle Seahawks last year, but playing a big role in the team winning the Super Bowl. Former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman shared his thoughts on Woolen's fit with the Eagles. While he wasn't thrilled about Woolen getting a one-year deal, he likes his fit with Philly's defense.

"In Vic Fangio's system, he's (Woolen) going to thrive. Opposite of Quinyon Mitchell, they're going to be one of the most dynamic pair of corners. I think this is a move that works. I'm sure he would have loved a longer term, more security. Nobody really loves playing on a one-year deal, but I think the game is starting to make sense for Riq in a way that this is going to be beneficial to him."

Richard Sherman spoke on Riq Woolen playing with the Eagles in 2026

Last season, Woolen made 41 tackles, one tackle for loss, one quarterback hit, 12 pass deflections, and one interception in 16 games with the Seahawks. While he was in and out of the lineup, Woolen came up big late in the season to help him secure a $15 million contract for 2026.

The Eagles needed help at CB2 after the failures of Adoree' Jackson and Kelee Ringo at those spots. Adding in Woolen will help solidify the cornerback position with Mitchell on the outside and Cooper DeJean in the slot.

To Fangio's credit, despite the inconsistent play from Jackson last year, he was very good late in the season for the Eagles. If anything, Woolen is going to show progression in this Eagles defense with his 6-foot-4 size, giving Philly something they haven't had on defense and something they hoped that Ringo would be.

Philly looks poised to have one of the best three-headed monsters at cornerback in the NFL. How Woolen will actually do is another question that won't be answered until September.
