Well, this is interesting. It also has to be seen as being expected. Another NFC team may be seeking to raid the Philadelphia Eagles' cupboard.
The New Orleans Saints have found someone they're interested in on the Birds' coaching staff. They have requested to interview Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore for their vacant head coaching position.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo were among the first to announce the news.
Kellen Moore is getting some looks from other NFL teams.
As Rapoport mentions, the interview request is Moore's first of the hiring cycle for coaches. He joined the Eagles this past off-season and has been named as a hot commodity in years past. Moore is eligible to interview virtually with any team beginning next week. For now, he is focused on the Eagles' Wild Card matchup with the Green Bay Packers.
The Saints have also requested to interview Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, and Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady. They have a future interview set up with former interim head coach Darren Rizzi, according to multiple reports
Moore, 36, joined the Eagles' staff after a one-year stint as Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator didn't pan out as expected. That opportunity came after spending five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.
The sixth-year offensive coordinator may very well be offered other interviews from teams that need a head coach. Those teams include the Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets, New England Patriots, and the aforementioned Saints.
In his first season with the Eagles, Moore has coached the offense to an average of 27.2 points per game. That places them in the top 10 of all NFL teams league-wide. He relied heavily on the rushing attack, one that saw Saquon Barkley rush for over 2,000 yards.
Jalen Hurts' 630 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns also helped the cause. The Eagles ranked eighth in total yards per game (367.2) and second in rush yards per game (179.3). Their ability to outlast other teams offensively makes Moore a potentially hot target this offseason.
Moore has interviewed with teams in previous years regarding vacant head coaching positions but was never offered one of those jobs. Might he strike gold this time around? Only time will tell. We'll soon see what transpires.
