While some Philadelphia Eagles fans have forgiven former wide receiver Terrell Owens for his antics when he was in Philly, others still hold some kind of animosity towards him.
Owens was taking part in the MLB's All-Star weekend festivities at Citizens Bank Park when he was asked about his thoughts on the Eagles trading A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots and the current state of the wide receiver room. While the Hall of Famer agreed with the Eagles' decision to trade Brown, he also acknowledged that DeVonta Smith's time has come to step up.
"I mean, they got DeVonta Smith. I mean, he's always been a number-one guy even when A.J. was here. I mean, he could have easily been WR1 at any game. So again, he's going to show that leadership. He's going to bring those guys along. So I don't see any drop-off. Those guys gonna be fine."
Terrell Owens backs DeVonta Smith up with strong vote of confidence
Not sure many Eagles fans thought the day would come, but everyone can agree with Owens' take on Smith. Last season, Smith led the Eagles in receiving yards with 1,008 and beat Brown by five, proving he can be the number-one receiver.
Smith has been working hard this offseason to prepare to be the Eagles' WR1. Reports came out that he was calling around and asking other receivers about being the number-one guy and what to do to be ready for the role.
Philly's wide receiver room is still in really good shape entering the 2026 season, even without Brown. The Eagles added rookie Makai Lemon, Dontayvion Wicks, Marquise "Hollywood" Brown, and Elijah Moore to add much-needed competition at the position.
The distraction of having A.J. Brown another season would have been too much for the Eagles to handle. This divorce had been lingering for a long time and needed to happen now before it got any worse. If there is anyone who understands this kind of situation better than anyone else, it would be Owens, so Eagles fans should take his word that it's a good move.

Smith now needs to show the rest of the NFL what Eagles fans have known for years: he can be the leading man in the passing game. The fan base hopes T.O. is right about what he said about Smith.
