The Cleveland Browns may be adamant in their desire not to trade All-Pro pass rusher Myles Garrett, but that won't stop teams from circling overhead as they try to land an All-Pro talent. The Philadelphia Eagles should be at the front of the line.
Garrett is the type of player that could take the Eagles to superteam level, as they have enough young talent to absorb the loss of a few premium draft picks. However, it seems like there are some voices in the media that don't want to see the Eagles go down this path.
Joe Giglio of WIP believes the Eagles would be better off avoiding a Garrett trade altogether, citing the fact they won the Super Bowl this season without a star pass rusher and the tendency for elite defensive ends to see their production decline after they finish up their eighth season.
Giglio sounds like one of those Eagles fans who were initially pessimistic about the Saquon Barklet signing because they had D'Andre Swift play just fine in 2023. Garrett is a superstar, and Vic Fangio's defense could be unstoppable with him in the fold.
WIP host oddly downplays Eagles trading for Myles Garrett
Garrett has recorded double-digit sacks in each of the last seven seasons and is just one season removed from winning Defensive Player of the Year in 2023. If he wasn't on a 3-14 team last year, he might have had a shot at holding onto his title.
The pass rush may be the biggest area of need for Philadelphia in the offseason. Graham retired, Sweat is likely to leave town with a substantial offer from another team, and bust free agent signing Bryce Huff is unlikely to factor into their plans in the next few years. The championship window is as open as it will ever be.
The Eagles may have won the Super Bowl thanks to their pass rush depth, but they're deep at every position. Should they just completely eschew adding stars as a result? Howie Roseman has earned the benefit of the doubt forever moving forward, but would it make sense to pass on a player like Garrett in favor of four lesser ones?
Whoever acquires Garrett will be getting arguably the best pass rusher in the league, and the Eagles putting him next to Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter would be a nightmare to stop. Just because the Eagles won without him doesn't mean they can't win with him.
