Eagles Draft: Assessing Value And Prioritizing Need
By Pat Roach
At the heart of the Eagles’ offseason endeavors exists a sole purpose; build a Super Bowl winning franchise. The true anatomy of a champion is difficult to quantify. However, a number of consistencies appear when examining past Super Bowl winners, particularly in those of the recent past. Each of the last 3 winners, for example, possessed several commonalities; they could rush the passer, defend the pass, and protect the passer. In today’s NFL, a premium is placed on players who either facilitate a good passing-attack, or on those who dismantle a good passing-attack.

Pass rushers, pass protectors, pass catchers, passers, and pass defenders (see the trend?), all inexorably effect the game. The one exemption in this is of course the Denver Broncos, who rose to glory in spite of a rapidly declining Peyton Manning (who served as little more than a caretaker on an otherwise elite team). History dictates that the inclusion of a player of the 2015 Manning’s caliber is a mere aberration, as the odds of assembling a defense that ranks top-15 all-time in DVOA are abysmal (Trent Dilfer and the 2000 Ravens send their regards).
