Malcolm Jenkins

The Eagles signed Malcolm Jenkins during the 2014 offseason and he has turned out to be one of the team’s best free agent pickups in recent memory.

Before signing Jenkins, the Eagles hadn’t had a decent safety since the departure of Brian Dawkins after the 2008 season. For years, the Eagles spent high draft picks on safety prospects like Nate Allen, Jaiquawn Jarrett and Macho Harris in hopes of finding the next great Eagles safety. When that didn’t work, they brought in players like Sean Jones and Patrick Chung to try and solidify the position. Again, the effort failed.

But finally, the Eagles struck gold with Jenkins.

In two years with the Eagles, Jenkins has recorded 189 tackles, 25 pass deflections, 5 interceptions and 4 forced fumbles. He has never missed a start since joining the Eagles and has become the voice of the team’s locker room. Considering Jenkins is still only 28 years old, it certainly seems the Eagles have found their long-term answer at safety.

After signing an extension with the Eagles earlier this offseason, Philadelphia now has Jenkins under contract for five more years at just over $40 million.

Not a bad deal for one of the elite safeties in the NFL.
