Philly ended the 2016 season on a high note. They beat the hated Cowboys at home. Sure, Dallas was resting their starters. No, they didn’t have anything to play for, but after 16 weeks of near misses, failure and blown opportunities, it was good to see this team get a win in week 17. It was good for the guys who wear the jerseys and good for the fans.
We mentioned earlier that Wentz set a record in the process. It bears repeating.
One last look at Wentz:
Carson Wentz started every game of the 2016 season. He threw for 3,782 yards and tossed 16 touchdown passes. He ran for two more, and he persevered despite his teammates being funneled in and out of the lineup due to injury for the majority of the season.
More often than not, Wentz had minimal options to work with. In 2017, he’ll be afforded the opportunity of working with a better supporting cast. Wide receivers Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith and running back LeGarrette Blount were plucked out of the free agency pool, and Mack Hollins, Shelton Gibson and Donnel Pumphrey were all added in the draft. If Wentz could set a team and league record for completions with, virtually nothing around him, imagine what he could do with some legitimate weapons. Eagles fans are excited, and they have every reason to be.
We’ll all be emotionally invested, and we’ll, no doubt, be tuning in to see what happens.
Honorable mention:
1. The blowout in Cincinnati:
Philly’s criticized for a lackluster performance. The leaders are challenged, and “The Birds” show more resolve down the stretch.
2. Paul Turner is elevated.
With so much concern surrounding the team’s receiving corps, a fan favorite is elevated from the practice squad to the active roster.
