Specialists

Kicker: David Akers

Punter: Donnie Jones

Long-Snapper: Jon Dorenbos

Kick Returner: Brian Mitchell

Punt Returner: DeSean Jackson

Head coach: Andy Reid (Not even “Big Red” could screw this squad up)

Reasons Why

Let’s preface this by saying one thing, David Akers was the man. He was basically automatic for the Eagles, and the fans loved him. They even bought Akers jerseys. How many times do you see jerseys for kickers? The Eagles have struggled to find consistent kicking since he left. The answer seems to be Caleb Sturgis, but it took a while to find that out.

The kick return position was a little more difficult since the Eagles haven’t really had a consistent elite return man, i.e. Devin Hester. Brian Mitchell only played two seasons for the Eagles, but averaged 26 yards per return. Now it wouldn’t really be much of a swing in field position, but at the time it was an additional five yards per drive. Punt returner, on the other hand, was easier. The reason it was easy can be summed up in five words; Miracle at the New Meadowlands. Jackson was/is electric with the ball in his hands, and he was always a threat to take it to the house.

The remaining specialists are wrapped up with Donnie Jones and “the magic man”, Jon Dorenbos. Jones has been booming punts for the Eagles and is averaging about 45 yards per kick in Philly. In terms of the long-snapper position, could you really choose anyone else? Dorenbos is probably the most recognizable long snapper in the NFL and has been as consistent as you can be during a career. Plus, he’s a magician. How cool is that?
