Eagles training camp notes: What’s going on with Torrey Smith?
Nobody seems to be mentioning Torrey Smith all that often.
Once the Philadelphia Eagles closed practice on Friday, five days of training camp were officially in the books. Perhaps no two position groups have garnered as much attention as the wide receiver corps and the cornerbacks. Maybe it’s because both have been seen as weak spots. Maybe it’s because everyone’s interested in how much guys like newly-added Torrey Smith can contribute.
Despite having a rough 2016 season, Smith was still one of the most highly touted free agents at the wide receiver position when the free agency period began. The Eagles, hoping to land one of the big fish in the free agency pool, landed two. Most of us are still trying to figure out how the Eagles got both he and Alshon Jeffery, but that’s exactly what happened.
Jeffery and the other guy:

Jeffery’s getting a ton of attention. We aren’t hearing about his teammate as much. Maybe it’s because his first two days of camp haven’t given us any highlight reel catches. Still, the veteran is proving that he was probably worth the Eagles’ investment. He’s been consistent. Maybe there were a few drops on day one that we didn’t see on day two, but he’s caught passes in traffic. He’s found open spots, and after making catches, he’s shown he still has some burst. Maybe it isn’t the old Smith, but there’s still some tread on the tires.
By one scout’s count, Smith has been credited with 20 catches on 27 targets that were catchable. That means he caught about 75 percent of the balls thrown in his area. That puts him right in line with what the Eagles receivers were doing a season ago, but no one’s worried. We’ve seen and heard enough. Smith will be fine.
