2019 NFL Draft: Philadelphia Eagles seven-round Mock Draft 2.0
Germaine Pratt, LB, NC State
Round 5, Pick 163
Are you disappointed that the Eagles don’t take a linebacker any higher? Don’t be. This should be expected. Similar to the backfield situation, the Eagles just don’t seem to value the linebacker position much. As a matter of fact, it looks as though they like to utilize a linebacker committee in a way. Last season, the Eagles had Jordan Hicks. This year they won’t. Losing Hicks isn’t ideal, but at the same time, the Eagles were right not to overpay him.
Without Hicks, Nigel Bradham thrives on the Eagles defense. And in all honesty, Kamu Grugier-Hill had a decent season in 2018. Don’t forget; the Eagles also signed L.J. Fort out of Pittsburgh as well. To everybody, that seemed like a special teams-only type of approach, but it really wasn’t. Fort was issued some significant playing time on the Steelers defense last season, and he was impressive.
Now, will they bank on Fort and Grugier-Hill to have a major battle at inside linebacker this year? Not exactly. But they have proven enough with their small sample size of play to allow the Eagles to avoid reaching on a linebacker early on in the draft. NC State’s Germaine Pratt will do in this case. A former safety, who converted into linebacker gives the Eagles the type of inside linebacker that they desire but missed on with Nathan Gerry.
