Philadelphia Eagles return to U.S. Bank Stadium for first time since SB LII
In week 6 of the 2019 NFL season, the Philadelphia Eagles will head back to the place where they hoisted the Lombardi Trophy for the first time in franchise history.
Let’s Flashback to February 2nd, 2018. The Philadelphia Eagles faced off against the defending Super Bowl champions, the New England Patriots. It was Nick Foles and the Birds who came out on top, in the Minnesota Vikings’ home stadium, U.S. Bank Stadium.
Now, in present-day, the Philadelphia Eagles are headed back to Minneapolis to take on the Minnesota Vikings.
These teams have a lot of history. The Eagles and Vikings have met 28 times, with both sides having won 14 times. The one record that separates these two teams is the playoff record. The Eagles and Vikings have faced off against one another in the postseason four times. The Eagles have won all four of those contests.
None bigger than the 2018 NFC Championship. Despite both teams being 13-3 on the season, the Eagles entered that game as underdogs. Many experts had the Vikings winning the game. It didn’t help that even the NFL’s official Facebook page was doubting Philly.
For those who don’t remember, the page accidentally posted an early Super Bowl ad that featured the Patriots and Vikings. Someone jumped the gun on that one, and someone definitely got fired because they were off just a bit.
The Eagles used all of that doubt, though, and mustered it into an all-out attack on the Vikings. The Birds won the game, 38-7, advancing to Super Bowl LII.
A lot followed that game, which included trash talk from both teams, with some incredibly Philly-like behavior. And of course, the Eagles won the Super Bowl, which happened to be in Minnesota’s home stadium.
So, the Eagles not only dominated the Vikings, they took away the Vikings’ chance of being the first team in NFL history to play in their home stadium. If that had happened, the Vikings would have definitely had the advantage against New England.
The Vikings would get a bit of revenge a year later, when they defeated the Eagles, 23-21. But you can bet Minnesota would like to get some more revenge by beating the Birds in the place where the Vikings feel they were meant to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
Both teams come in at 3-2. Bound to be a good one. Especially since Philly definitely feels at home there. It’s the place where it finally happened. It’s Always is a good one, when these two teams play. Unless the Vikings are playing Philly in the playoffs.
