January 7th, 2007: A great game and the right team won

On January 7th, during the 2007 NFC Wildcard Round, the Giants and Eagles met in the postseason. Things hadn’t exactly gone according to the plan in Philly. They had started the season with a 5-6 win-loss total. Donovan McNabb got hurt, but Jeff Garcia stepped in and led Philly to five-straight wins down the stretch.

When their game in the Wildcard kicked off, a familiar opponent was on the other sideline.

New York had made the postseason despite an 8-8 record. Philly was favored, but in typical Giants and Eagles fashion, none of that mattered after the opening coin flip.

The Giants led 7-0 after the first quarter. The Eagles led 17-10 at the half. An illegal block penalty meant a punt return for a touchdown by Brian Westbrook wouldn’t count. the Giants rallied from ten points down in the fourth quarter to tie the game with five minutes left, but Philly ran the ‘four-minute offense’ to perfection, draining all of the time off of the clock and setting up David Akers to kick the game-winning field goal to send New York packing as time expired.

It wasn’t fun while it was happening, but the champagne definitely flowed after this one was over. Tiki Barber never played in another NFL game.
