November 20th, 1988: The first of two oft-forgotten ‘Miracles’

Remember all of that stuff we said about miracles? Perhaps we should petition NFL Films and the Philadelphia Eagles themselves to author a couple of pieces about those other two miracles in front of a hostile Giants contingent.

One was Westbrook’s punt return. The other came courtesy of a 1988 come-from-behind victory engineered, in part, by Eagles legend Randall Cunningham. To be honest, this forgotten ‘miracle win’ had two miracles in it.

First, there was the aforementioned Cunningham performance to send the game into overtime. Who knows where that came from, but come on. It’s Randall.

The second came when the Giants blocked Luis Zendejas field goal attempt after Philly drove back down the field in overtime to win it. Zendejas picked the ball up, lateraled it to defensive lineman Clyde Simmons, and one of the greatest Eagles ever ran it in for the game-winning score.

Both teams finished with an identical record, but the Eagles took the divisional crown thanks to a season sweep of you know who. This one doesn’t get talked about nearly as often as it should be.
