5. player. 42. . . . Robert Saleh

Current position: Defensive coordinator, San Francisco 49ers

One of the formulas for hiring a team’s next head coach in the NFL has always been to find available talent on other coaching staffs. It helps if that coaching talent is enjoying success in his current position and doing so at about the time that the interested party begins its’ search.

Check each of those boxes for Robert Saleh, currently the defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers. Much of the current success that the Niners are experiencing is a result of the phenomenal job that Saleh has done with San Fran’s defense. Nick Bosa is probably going to win the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award in a landslide.

At season’s end, Saleh will be on a ton of coaching radars, especially if that team wants a defensive-minded head coach, but here’s the thing.

We’re talking about Jerry Jones, who probably wants to make that splash hire. Saleh might not be ‘sexy’ enough. Still, great coordinators can go on to be great head coaches, and they often leave a huge void when they’re gone. No one knows that more than Eagles fans.
