His experience is the biggest key.

There aren’t many candidates out there with as much experience as Jim Caldwell. He has a stellar track record, having helped in the development of two Super Bowl MVPs, Peyton Manning and Joe Flacco.

He started his coaching career back in 1972 with the Iowa Hawkeyes as their graduate assistant. His first gig as a quarterbacks coach came in 1987 with the Penn State Nittany Lions. Since then, the quarterback position has been his main focus, and he’s done an amazing job over the years.

Not only would Caldwell’s experience in molding franchise quarterbacks bode well for Wentz, pairing his offensive background with head coach Doug Pederson could breathe new life into this offense.

Pederson has controlled the offensive play calling during his entire tenure in Philly. It’s doubtful, but perhaps with an experienced play-caller by his side in Caldwell, Pederson would give up some of that responsibility and allow Caldwell to have a crack at it. Pederson would definitely have more confidence in Caldwell calling the plays than he would have in some of the younger candidates that are out there, many of which have been named as potential hires.

Graham Harrell is only 34, Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks coach Mike Kafka and Eagles quarterbacks coach Press Taylor are only 32 years of age. Caldwell has been coaching longer than some of these candidates have been alive.

The prospect of bringing in a young guy with new ideas is enticing, but usually, those kinds of hires are hit or miss. The Eagles can’t afford to take that type of risk here. Going for an experienced and proven offensive mind like Caldwell is the Eagles’ best bet.
