player. 54. . . . Zach Ertz, tight end.

Time flies, doesn’t it? Who would have thought when Zach Ertz set the NFL record for the most receptions in a single season by a tight end with 116 that we’d be arguing about whether or not he should be trade bait less than two years later?

The NFL is truly a “What have you done for me lately” league, but this isn’t the first time that an All-Pro has asked for more money than his team wants to give him. It won’t be the last time that it happens either.

The problem is if you’re an Eagles fan, this team has shelled out so may pathetic deals recently that they’ve tied their own hands. Maybe they’d have the money if Howie hadn’t guaranteed the contracts of both DeSean Jackson and Alshon Jeffery for 2020. Maybe they’d have the money if so many guys who were average weren’t being paid like Pro Bowl talents.

Did you see what Malik Jackson is making? When the new league year started, Philly had ten draft choices and around $40 million to spend in free agency. Howie Roseman ran through that money like a teenager with an allowance and they’re down to eight selections.

What’s sad is this team doesn’t seem to be much better now than they were a week ago. Don’t blame Zach Ertz for wanting to be paid like one of the top tight ends in the game (which he is). Blame the Eagles brass for this team being in this position in the first place. Grade: D
