Doug Pederson dishes on new Philadelphia Eagles, scouting situation
How in the world is this team getting any scouting done?
One question that’s been asked a lot is how the draft will be affected if the 32 NFL teams aren’t able to scout in the ways that they’ve become accustomed to doing. For Coach Pederson, working from home hasn’t been much different from his normal day at the Novacare Complex.
Here’s what he had to say on the subject.
"Obviously, the thing that we’ve really learned with the ability to do Facetime meetings, to use Microsoft Teams (and) still, sort of conduct business as usual without being face to face in the same room. Technology is an amazing thing. (I take) my hat off to our I.T. department (and) to our video department on the football side… For me it’s about, once I get up in the morning, I usually try to get a workout in, share a cup of coffee with my wife, and then I begin my day…"
Just what does that day consist of you ask? Coach continued.
"(I’m) continuing to look at college players. (I’m) preparing for the draft. (I’m) speaking to college coaches. We’re kind of having to do that (in an) old school (fashion) with our scouts being off of the road right now and with Pro Days being cancelled, so (I spend) a lot of time on the phone talking with college coaches preparing for the draft as if I’m right there at (the) Novacare (Complex) in my office."
One might be able to reason that, if everyone has the same challenges, the playing field seems to be pretty level. We were able to see the NFL Combine, but past that, individual workouts and Pro Days don’t make for successful scouting on their own. These teams should have been watching these guys all season. Hopefully, the “Birds” took some good notes between September and February.
