54. . . . Craig James, cornerback. 3. player

One of 2019’s primetime heroes has a tough hill to climb.

Philly has ten cornerbacks and four defensive backs on the current roster. If we’d place an educated guess on the top seven guys on the depth chart, we’d probably go Darius Slay, Jalen Mills (he’s still listed as a corner on the roster), Nicell Robey-Coleman, Avonte Maddox, Cre’Von LeBlanc, Sidney Jones, and Rasul Douglas.

The 2020 preseason is window dressing, and based on what’s commonly called “the numbers game”, Craig James and each of the other guys mentioned are on a countdown that probably leads to the NFL’s waiver wire.

At best, for Craig James, Tremon Smith, Trevor Williams, Prince Smith, Elijah Riley, Michael Jacquet, and Grayland Arnold the preseason is all about competing for what might be one spot on the 53-man roster. The worst-case scenario for each of these young men is this.

The 2020 preseason is window dressing, and based on what’s commonly called “the numbers game”, Craig James and each of the other guys mentioned are on a countdown that probably leads to the NFL’s waiver wire or a spot on another team.

That means James’ biggest highlight as an Eagle might wind up being that deflected pass versus Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers that resulted in a Nigel Bradham interception to seal things in Week 4 of the 2019 season.
