2 Philadelphia Eagles with most to gain after Josh Perkins lands on IR
Despite a few nicks and bruises, Noah Togiai might be the Philadelphia Eagles’ third tight end if he’s healthy.
It never fails. An unknown walks into a training camp. A weird series of twists and turns vaults him from longshot to someone who can seriously challenge for a roster spot. An injury occurs.
It’s happened to Joe Ostman, and now, in 2020, the same story serves as a pretty accurate description of what’s gone on in the world belonging to Noah Togiai. A week ago, he seemed like a nice option for a position on the practice squad. Now, he’s someone who looks like he could legitimately, beat out both Caleb Wilson and Tyrone Swoopes for a spot on the active roster.
Togiai got hurt on the last play of Day 5’s practice session. Nothing demonstrates that it’s serious or something that will linger, but Philly saw fit to sign Tyrone Swoopes on August 25th. He’s spent the last three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. It would seem as though he has the leg up on the younger guys, but what’s that saying? Last man in and first man out? Is that it? He has missed a considerable amount of what this team has been doing.
Togiai has done all that he can to impress his coaches in camp, and he’s done a good job of doing so. The question is has he done enough. If Philly follows last year’s road map, they’ll enter the 2020 regular season with two tight ends, and we all know who those tight ends are. If they go with a third, the guy wearing the number ’85’ might be the guy to pay attention to.
Caleb Wison and Tyrone Swoopes are both talented, but from the outside looking in, it appears Togiai is the man with the most to gain following Perkins’ injury. It may sound crass, but by now, we all know this business of this ever-evolving NFL. Guys get hurt. Guys step in. The season moves on. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.
