Philadelphia Eagles: 2 Ways to contain Aaron Donald in Week 2
By Smit Bajaj
1. Might the Philadelphia Eagles tailbacks contribute as blockers?
The Philadelphia Eagles sorely missed Miles Sanders last Sunday. We’ve all gotten to know him for how dynamic he can be when he has the ball in his hands, but he also has a huge impact on the game when he isn’t the focal point of a play.
A common issue with rookie running backs is their inability to block well and as a result, their playing time decreases. Last year, however, Miles Sanders eventually took over as the top running back on the depth chart, thanks, in large part to Jordan Howard’s absence and his ability as a pass blocker.
Now Miles Sanders won’t line up across from Aaron Donald next week. As a matter of fact, we don’t even know if he’s playing in Week 2 yet, but if he is, he and anyone else the ‘Birds’ line up in the backfield will need to help pick him up if he gets by the interior linemen. That’s a scary thought and one that no one wants to imagine, but there is a chance we might see Sanders of Boston Scott attempting to ‘chip’ Donald if he’s in the Eagles backfield. Here’s a look at ’26’ in action and doing things the right way.
Last week, Boston Scott made a few poor reads that led to two sacks in big situations. Miles Sanders won’t fix the offensive line issues, but his pass blocking ability will give Wentz some more time in the pocket. Donald isn’t a player who can be stopped just by using one technique, so a variety of schemes will have to be used by this offensive line to contain the six-time pro bowler. As a matter of fact, let’s dig into a few of them.
