Examining this Philadelphia Eagles sinking ship on overreaction Monday
By Ben Swanger
Forget statistics, the eye test is indicative of the Philadelphia Eagles.
After Week 1 it’s easy to overreact, and we all did that. After Week 2, it’s easier to theorize what a team’s fate might shape up to be. Right now, the Philadelphia Eagles are headed towards a disappointing season, but what’s the worst thing that could happen?
Two straight 9-7 seasons for the Eagles have left players, coaches, and fans wanting more. Will they achieve more this season? Can they achieve more? The answer seems to be a resounding no.
Which is worse? Is it worse to be terrible or is better to be mediocre? Three weeks ago, nobody would have guessed the Eagles would be in this situation through two weeks, even if they thought that the ‘Birds’ might be 0-2, but here they are. There’s been an embarrassing loss to a team with no nickname, and they got doubled up by a team they haven’t lost to in 16 years. It feels like this season is in the toilet, but sometimes, you just have to go backward to move forward.
Will the Eagles turn it around? The schedule isn’t in their favor. After facing the Bengals in Week 3, the Eagles get three potential playoff teams, a San Francisco 49ers team that may be short-staffed, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Baltimore Ravens. All have looked sharp through two weeks.
The Eagles certainly have the talent to turn things around, but what we’ve seen out of Doug Pederson, Carson Wentz, and the defense through two weeks, the eyeball test screams otherwise.
Here are a few more observations (or overreactions):
- Miles Sanders is the team’s offensive MVP, and it’s evident through two weeks.
- Jalen Hurts, after being active for the first time, is creeping down Wentz’s spine.
- J.J. Arcega-Whiteside is a certified bust.
- Fletcher Cox could be trade bait at the deadline, should this team be sellers.
- No need to bring Alshon Jeffery back into the fold if this team continues to collapse.
- Nate Herbig is the team’s starting guard of the future.
- Josh Sweat is the best defensive end on the team.
- The Eagle’s have the worst linebackers in the NFL and it isn’t close.
The week leading up to Week 3’s game versus the Bengals should be very interesting.
