3 Lessons Philadelphia Eagles fans learned from Jeffrey Lurie’s presser
By Hunter Doyle
2. This was far from an easy decision for the Philadelphia Eagles owner.
Lurie talked about how his relationship with Pederson has existed for 20-plus years. From his journey as a quarterback to his tenure as both an assistant and head coach, Lurie described Doug as ‘family’.
He emphasized the difference between Doug deserving to lose his job and the team needing a new head coach moving forward. Shortly after, he discussed the success they have had over the past five years.
This is a decision Lurie didn’t want to make. Perhaps a major factor was likely the coaching changes that Doug wanted to make?
Pederson reportedly wanted to promote Press Taylor to offensive coordinator, the same Press Taylor that played a part in the massive regression of Carson Wentz. Doug also was planning to promote pass game analyst Andrew Breiner to quarterbacks coach.
Yes, that’s the same guy that helped design those predictable routes and that passing game that was starved of creativity. Breiner was the pass game analyst and quarterbacks coach with Mississippi State from 2018-2019 which isn’t saying much. Trusting him to develop Jalen Hurts or help fix Wentz would’ve been unbelievably unreasonable.
As if all of that wasn’t bad enough, Pederson was apparently considering defensive line coach Matt Burke or former Eagles defensive backs coach Cory Undlin for the defensive coordinator position. Burke’s tenure as a defensive coordinator in Miami a few years ago wasn’t pretty. Undlin was the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions this year and his defense ranked 32nd in points allowed, 32nd in yards allowed, and 31st in turnovers.
If the reports are true and Pederson actually suggested these four coaches for those four positions, it shouldn’t be a surprise that he got fired.
