player. 51. . . . Brandon Staley, Rams DC.

Don’t give up on the Philadelphia Eagles hiring a defensive guy.

Philly didn’t land Robert Saleh as some fans were hoping, but though some might try and debate this, the Los Angeles Rams’ defensive coordinator Brandon Staley might be the next best thing. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on January 16th that sources are telling him the Birds are interested in sitting him down for an interview, and thanks to L.A.’s divisional-round loss to the Green Bay Packers, that talk might come sooner rather than later.

Now, we know what some of you are thinking. You want an offensive-minded head coach, and that’s a reasonable argument. Don’t sleep on Staley though. Lincoln Riley is like a shiny toy. Staley is like that nice lump of coal that can be shaped into a diamond. Josh McDaniels is neither of those things.

You know what? The longer one takes to just sit and reflect, the easier it is to come up with more options that are just plain better. You could even throw another Bill Belichick disciple in that conversation.

Take a poll among Eagles fans, and you might be surprised to learn that they’d rather have Jerod Mayo. Don’t take our staff’s word for it though. Ask around and check with a few for yourselves!

Update: According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Staley will take over as the L.A. Chargers head coach. It doesn’t appear that he had any interest in the Eagles vacancy.
