Philadelphia Eagles draft watch: Top 5 offensive tackles not named Sewell
Don’t fret if the Philadelphia Eagles don’t land Penei Sewell.
It’s hard to put this list together without smiling. The unpredictable nature of the draft (and Eagles vice president and general manager Howie Roseman) makes it near impossible to determine what this franchise might do at six.
Again, taking Sewell might not be a bad decision. It isn’t an exciting, Twitter-altering move, but it would make sense. The questions are would he still be on the board and what might the Birds do if he isn’t? Fortunately, if they decide that adding depth at tackle later in the selection meeting is the smarter play, they will find some talent.
Honorable mention: Alex Leatherwood, Alabama Crimson Tide
If you try to find anyone with a negative review of Alabama’s Alex Leatherwood, you might find that to be an exercise in futility. This young man’s game is solid, and he’s still improving. It was hard not to put him in the top five, but in the end, several guys simply graded out higher.
5. Sam Cosmi, Texas Longhorns
Sam Cosmi added a few pounds for the 2020 season but did so in a way that it didn’t derail his game or make him more sluggish. He could get stronger for the next level, but there’s enough evidence to state that he should be on someone’s roster come September.
4. Jalen Mayfield, Michigan Wolverines
Jalen Mayfield isn’t what someone might call overpowering, but he’s solid and will wind up on someone’s roster. He also missed some time in 2020 due to injury and signed with CAA. Yes, that’s the same agency that Harvey Weinstein decided to rock out with.
Maybe he just needs a little guidance, as we all did when we were in our twenties, but if you can get past those things, this might be someone worth grooming into a starter. He’s probably more of a right tackle than a left tackle though.
