The Philadelphia Eagles select an exciting young safety in Jamar Johnson.

Jim Schwartz’s defense was solid in stopping the run, but it struggled to force turnovers last year for the Eagles. Philadelphia ranked 29th in the NFL with only eight interceptions for the year.

Johnathan Gannon’s defense will likely run a two-deep safety look which will allow the defensive backs to be more aggressive in attacking the football. This type of defense thrives on rangy safeties who have excellent instincts for defending the pass. Enter Indiana safety, Jamar Johnson.

Justin Fields only threw six interceptions the entire 2020 season and two of them were to Jamar Johnson. He’s a prospect who has incredible instincts and a knack for snatching the ball out of the air. He may not be a tremendous athlete, but his ball skills and football IQ more than make up for this.

After losing Malcolm Jenkins and Jalen Mills in back-to-back years, the Eagles are rather thin at the safety position. They signed Anthony Harris to a deal that will only last a year, and Rodney McLeod is on the wrong side of thirty battling injuries.

Johnson may not see immediate playing time over the veterans, but the tides are set to turn for the entire Eagles defense and that includes the safety position. K’Von Wallace and Jamar Johnson could be an exciting young safety duo moving forward. McLeod and Harris could also aid both of them in their development.
