Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Genard Avery

Be honest! How many of you forgot for about a week that Genard Avery was on this team? It’s been a rather peculiar run for the former fifth-round draft choice since he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019 at the trade deadline for a fourth-rounder in 2021’s NFL Draft.

The thought, at that time, was Philly would use that decision as an opportunity to not only add to their pass rush but it would also give Avery a chance to get a jumpstart on the 2020 regular season.

So far, in an Eagles jersey, Avery is credited with 12 total tackles and two sacks in 19 career games. He’s still listed as a defensive end on Philadelphia’s training camp roster, but if he’s to make this team, he’ll do so as a linebacker. Unfortunately for him, the Birds might only carry six on the 53-man roster.

All that’s been said to say this. With Alex Singleton, T.J. Edwards, and Eric Wilson being locks and with Shaun Bradley, Patrick Johnson, Rashad Smith, JaCoby Stevens, and Davion Taylor walking around, Avery’s chances of making this roster are seemingly hanging on by a thread.
