Nick Mullens wins the Philadelphia Eagles backup QB battle (for a night anyway)

Third-string quarterback Nick Mullens has endured a ton of criticism, and you know what? He’s deserved every ounce of it. He’s been awful, completing six of 15 passes over the course of two games resulting in 31 yards and zero touchdowns. He’s also thrown three interceptions.

The man figured to be the Philadelphia Eagles’ backup quarterback, Joe Flacco, hasn’t been much better, but he has exceeded the efforts of Mr. Mullens, going 20 for 34 during Philly’s first two preseason games while throwing for 261 yards. He’s also tossed a touchdown and a pick.

Expect to see both in this one as everyone expects Jalen Hurts to be absent. The Jets won’t be as good as the two other teams the Eagles have faced in 2021’s preseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots, and that’s putting it mildly.

If Mullens gets the bulk of the snaps in the second half, a very real possibility, then, he’ll be competing versus a lot of guys that won’t be playing by the time we all reach Week 1 of the regular season. Expect that to help what might be his final showing in an Eagles uniform.

He’ll outplay Joe Flacco from a statistical standpoint for that reason, but it won’t help his cause though. There’s a theory that the Birds could carry two quarterbacks into the regular season. That would make Nick Mullens, in all likelihood, the odd man out.
