It’s nice to talk about drama that doesn’t involve the Philadelphia Eagles.

After years of discussing Nick Foles, Carson Wentz, Jalen Hurts, and now Joe Flacco and Gardner Minshew, it was nice to discuss someone else’s quarterback drama.

Inside The Iggles: What in the heck is going on with this Trey Lance/ Jimmy Garoppolo battle? What’s the hesitancy in committing to one or the other, and how does this turn out?

Panacy: Right now (emphasizing right now), Jimmy Garoppolo gives San Francisco the best chance at winning games. Trey Lance showed plenty of promise during training camp and the preseason, which is fantastic. But it’s important to note he just turned 21 years old and hasn’t started a full season since 2019, his only full year at the college level, so he’s going to be raw. Paralleling Lance’s impressive preseason performances was how poorly he recognized pressure. The game still needs to slow down for him.

In some regard, the 49ers are playing the long game with Lance and letting him develop slowly. But with three losing seasons in four years, head coach Kyle Shanahan also needs to win now. While he has plenty of faults and shortcomings, Garoppolo still has the edge there.

For now.
